We Build Your Dreams

Studying Architecture

Architecture is a rewarding and exciting career; shaping and molding the spaces in which we live and work are daunting tasks that bring endless possibilities. If you've decided to study to become an architect, there are certain things you should know before you get started, and general knowledge you should also be aware of.

Studying architecture can prepare a person to work in a variety of fields. Architects help to design buildings, plan construction sites, restore old buildings, and use their skills to teach art or history. Architects generally have higher-level math skills, and drawing prowess is a must.

Teens in high school can prepare for a career in architecture by intensively studying math, taking a mechanical drawing course (if available), and taking drawing and painting classes. Architecture is equal parts practical and artistic, and prospective architects should work to refine their tastes and skills in art.

High-schoolers interested in architecture should also read magazines like Architectural Digest, which offers plenty of design information. Architects have to give equal consideration to design and function, as well as feasibility. It is also a good idea to spend some time working on construction sites, in order to understand the challenges builders face when carrying out an architectural design.

Modern architects rely on computer programs like AutoCAD, which helps in the planning of design logistics, city planning and civil engineering. A lot of community colleges offer courses in the use of AutoCAD. A person wanting to become an architect should take some of these courses before they graduate high school; they may be offered in the evening or over the summer.

In college, most pursue an architecture major, and strive toward a masters' degree in architecture. Going to college to study architecture allows people to learn about its history, local building codes, and design aspects.

Those that are more into city planning should contemplate pursuing a degree in civil engineering. Civil engineers work with architects to plan structures and design buildings. No matter which field you choose, bilinguality is a great asset. Many construction workers speak Spanish as a primary language, especially in Arizona, California, and Texas. Directly communicating with those implementing your designs can be both inspiring and helpful.
